Hey!

It’s been a while since my last log, huh! I am struggling to find time to post. I have at least five topics I would like to comment but I can’t find spare time to sit down and post it.

Anyway, today I am talking about our design process to make the Voodies. As I said before, we have many artists working simultaneously on this project. Crochet is a slow art and it’s impossible to rush it, so it is what it is.

We are having a hard time to find the “golden ratio” for the Voodies, the main characters of this project. There will be thousands of Voodies, so we are taking our time to find the best design possible here. After all, it’s our face, our postcard.

We had many iterations, drawings and lots of crochets in the past 2 weeks. I think we found the final design, but now we need to translate it into the real world.

We are facing some challenges and we need to adapt in order to give form and rigidity to the dolls. We are trying a lot of different materials to mimic on crochet what we achieved on paper: MDF, wire, plastic.

We are almost there, each new iteration helps us evolve and discover new possibilities. It’s a cool process but sometimes it’s tiresome. I know the artist can get grumpy about it (“hey, change this; change that; now I think it was better the other way, change back to that”) and I am trying my best to avoid this situation. They need to fulfill my order but at the same time I want them enjoying the journey and giving their input.

I want to establish a long term partnership with my artists. There is a long road ahead, even after minting, and I want them on this boat.

We had a loooot of sketches. I will post some of them to show how it evolved:

We finally agreed this was the one!
1:1 scale drawing
Crocheting it
First try. Not there yet.
Another try, looking better but there are flaws (thank gawd my artist is super friendly and patient, she did it several times already)
